They say you should never meet your heroes,
and they're probably about right on that score.
But when your heroes look like
Jesus-in-faded-denim
and make the kind of
delicate wind-swept lullaby folk music
to crack hearts open upon,
I'm willing to make an exception.
That Sam Beam is a rolling tobacco
kind of a guy comes as little surprise.
What's perhaps more of a revelation
is the fact that, despite being raised in Sodom South Carolina,
our host is a big fan of
Time Lords and Gallifrey
and Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space.
You wouldn't think it to look at him.
Or maybe, just maybe, you actually would.
We leave Sam sipping on a mohito
beneath the neon glow of the hotel entrance.
His lion's mane of a beard all aglow in the fuzzy 1am light.
His new album, 'The Shepherd's Dog' isn't out until next month,
but I already have the sneaking suspicion
it's going to be one of my favourite longplayers of the year.
