2 ABC soaps going extinct

Don't waste your time trying to get into these soap operas, because ABC has canceled them.  Entertainment Weekly reports All My Children will air it's final episode in September 2011 and One Life To Live is scheduled for execution in January 2012.

AMC has been on the air since 1970 and OLTL debuted in 1968.  General Hospital, which first hit television in 1963, will remain as the lone soapie on the network.  Yeah, we'll see for how long!  Two new "lifestyle" shows will replace the long-running soaps, one called The Chew (like The View, but for foodies) and The Revolution (about weight loss.)

ABC Daytime President Brian Frons says in a statement, "While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is. We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways."  Translation: soaps are outdated and ridiculous.  Plus they're stupid expensive to make.

What the hell is Susan Lucci going to do with her life now?  She's dedicated her entire career to playing that batshit crazy Erica Kane on All My Children.

They're so gonna kill her off.
